Farmer says cover crop seed is scarce
A Wisconsin farmer says he’s concerned about finding enough cover crop seed for his prevented plant acres. Mike Walter with Walter Grain Farm near Johnson Creek, Wisconsin says, “I’m supposed to have my hands on it, but until it’s in my shed, I don’t know.”
Walter tells Brownfield they normally farm more than six-thousand acres, mostly corn and soybeans with some wheat, but the spring weather changed their plans. “We’re going to put a cover crop on. We have a bunch of neighbors looking for forage of some sort so it’s going to go in next month and they will be able to harvest it after September to feed animals.”
Walter’s advice for farmers considering cover crops is to check different sources, saying “It’s not there” at his local suppliers.
Walter Grain Farm is also the host site for Wisconsin Farm Technology Days starting July 23rd.
