Combating weed resistance starts with herbicide knowledge

The next year could bring some challenging decisions on herbicide use as farmers battle weed resistance.

As they look forward into 2020 Jim Schwartz with Beck’s Hybrids wants farmers to know..

“That they have a lot of choices and they need to employ those choices as it relates to battling resistant weeds in the future.”

Schwartz says there are several new herbicide trait platforms coming on the market and farmers need to know the best options for their operation.

“Weed resistance continues to be an evolving issue and it is really important for farmers to get out in front of that because once you develop resistance in a field it is a huge challenge.”

He tells Brownfield delayed planting this year poses a new set of problems.

“We are going to be spraying a lot of herbicides in July this year and there are quite a few products out there that have a ten month rotation restriction.”

Schwartz says Beck’s doesn’t sell herbicides, so they want to give farmers unbiased information to base their decisions on.

Brownfield interviewed Schwartz at Beck’s Herbicide Insight Field Day in Effingham, Illinois.
