Two human legs found in the Susquehanna River, police trying to figure out who they belong to

Last month a fisherman made an unpleasant discovery along the Susquehanna River — two sawn-off human legs.

The legs were found near the Hepburn Street Dam in Williamsport on May 11, and now the Lycoming County Coroner and state police are trying to figure out who the legs belong to and how they got in the river.

The legs were cut at the knee and the toenails were painted pink, giving some indication that the victim may be a female. But investigators searched the river after the legs were found, and nothing else was discovered.

Coroner Charles Kiessling Jr. said no one was reported missing in the Williamsport area, so the legs may belong to someone killed elsewhere. The death may have occurred as long as six months ago.

DNA from the remains have been entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
