Cruise ship rescues and mishaps: 6 times emergency struck on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, more
Days ago, a 55-year-old Canadian man and his wife had to be airlifted from Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas cruise ship because the man was suffering from abdominal pain. It's far from the only time an emergency struck on one of these excursions.
From 250 passengers with norovirus symptoms to Coast Guard assists, here are just a handful of mishaps and rescues at sea from the past year on popular cruise ships.
April 2019: Possible heart attack at sea
Also on a Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas, a 71-year-old woman began to experience symptoms of a heart attack.
The Coast Guard arrived and was able to evacuate the woman from the ship about 30 miles east of Asbury Park, New Jersey, back to shore at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.
March 2019: Unconscious on a 32-day cruise
A 52-year-old passenger was found unconscious on the 17th day of the 32-day transatlantic cruise MSC Divina.
The cruise was about 100 miles southeast of Atlantic City, New Jersey, when the medical emergency occurred and Atlantic City helicopters had to airlift the man back to land for rescue.
January 2019: 250 fall ill on Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean's "Oasis of the Seas" had over 250 passengers and crew members experiencing norovirus-like symptoms, leading the crew to skip a stop in Cozumel, Mexico and head back to dock in Port Canaveral, Florida.
Norovirus "...causes diarrhea and vomiting that typically lasts for one to three days." As a result, the ship had to return to its home port a day early.
January 2019: Airlifted from Carnival Pride
50 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, a 40-year-old woman with abdominal pains had to be airlifted from a Carnival Pride cruise ship.You can watch the rescue in the video above.
December 2018: Airlift after possible kidney failure
A month prior, another passenger had to be airlifted off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
This time, it was a 79-year-old man with symptoms of kidney failure, aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship “Anthem of the Seas.”
