Education: Elks names students of the month

Carlsbad leaders graduate from Leadership New Mexico

Leadership New Mexico announced Robert Baldridge, General Manager – New Mexico Operations, Intrepid Potash New Mexico, LLC, Carlsbad; Bruce Covert, President and Project Manager, Nuclear Waste Partnership, LLC; and Cathryn Hibbs, Chief Executive Officer, Carlsbad Medical Center graduated from the 2018-2019 program.

The graduates attended educational sessions which are held in various communities in New Mexico. The six two-day program sessions identify the issues and opportunities facing New Mexico such as health and human services, economic development, education, environment and natural resources, government, crime and justice, and leadership.

Leadership New Mexico is a non-profit, educational organization founded in 1995 to identify current and emerging leaders throughout New Mexico, enhance their leadership skills, and deepen their knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing the state.

Carlsbad FFA attends conference

Carlsbad FFA traveled to Las Cruces June 3-7 to the State FFA Convention held on the campus of New Mexico State University.

Carlsbad FFA was recognized by the State FFA Association as the outstanding chapter in the state of New Mexico.

Ethan Clark and Ray Morin received state FFA certificates at the conference.

Six freshmen Greenhands competed in the state quiz competition in which they were asked questions on FFA history, and the quiz team received 2nd in the state.

Carlsbad FFA’s advisor is Leslie Clark. 

Burke receives scholarship

New Mexico State Business Administration announced announced Ricahrd Burke of Carlsbad received its 2019 Scholarships.

Burke was named an outstanding high school graduating senior at the School Law Conference, and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to further his higher education.

Nominations were received from school boards and selections were based on criteria including demonstrated leadership, academic performance, community involvement and extracurricular activities.

Carlsbad Public Library awards LEGO set

Aunisti Ingram, 8, won the drawing for a LEGO space shuttle set, given away as part of the free summer reading program at Carlsbad Public Library.

The LEGO set was given by an anonymous donor.

Aunisti receives her prize from Mrs. Nieman at the library.

Aunisti was a student in Ms. Arnwine's class last year at Sunset. She is active and enjoys gymnastics, roller skating, bike riding, basketball, and softball. She also sings at her church. Aunisti has a pet shihtsu named Said. She lives with her grandparents, Daniel and Della Mullins, and older sister, Savannah.

Elk's students of the month

Kollen Fiala and Kirsten Rainwater were named Elks Student of the Month for May.

Fiala is the son of Anna Marle Fiala and Alan Fiala. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church, active in soccer and golf. He is also a member of the Carlsbad High School's BPA.

Rainwater is the daughter of Lance and Sherry Rainwater. She is  an active member of BPA, Key Club, the student council and student athletic training.

Aaron Overstreet and Sadie Hoffman were named the Elks Student of the Month for June.

Overstreet is the son of John and Stephanie Overstreet. He plans to attend University of New Mexico and study either business or law.

Hoffman is the daughter of Amber and Jason Hoffman. She plans to attend New Mexico State University in Las Cruces and double major in art and business.
