Farmers continue to face planting challenges

Farmers are facing record planting delays, and some are turning to prevent plant.

Jamie Mason grows corn and soybeans in Sullivan, Indiana.

“Like everywhere else we’ve been very wet- the wettest season on record,” he says.

Mason says he took the prevent plant option on some acres.

“We made the decision coming into June 5th, looking at the long range forecast and where we were going to be,” he says. “Luckily we were properly insured which has really helped.”

He says the second round of market facilitation program payments is also top of mind.

“The thing on everybody’s mind is round two of the MFP payments and how that’s going to affect us,” he says. “We have some questions about that and we hope for some answers.”

Mason spoke to brownfield during the 18th annual Indiana Farm Bureau Leader Trip. Other Farm Bureau members also expressed concern about the planting season.
