Allentown Deja Vu nightclub shooting: How it compares to worst shootings in Pennsylvania

At least 10 people were wounded Thursday morning in an apparent gang-related shooting as gunmen opened fire on patrons leaving a nightclub in Allentown, Pennsylvania, according to police.

The shooting outside of Deja Vu nightclub is one of the worst mass shootings in Lehigh Valley history. All the victims are expected to survive and many remained hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

Authorities believe there were three shooters. In a statement, Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin said the shooting did not appear to be random.

“It appears that at least one individual was a target,” Martin said. No arrests have been made at this time. 

Here is a look at some of the most notorious fatal shootings in Pennsylvania, dating back to 2000. 

Oct. 27, 2018: 11 dead, 6 injured

Robert Bowers stormed into the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh shouting hate for Jews and killing worshipers in a 20-minute attack.

Bowers killed 11 worshipers and wounded six other people. Bowers was taken into custody after being wounded in a shootout with police. He faces a 63-count indictment that charges him with hate crimes, obstructing religious belief and using a firearm during crimes of violence, but has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors have not said whether they will pursue the death penalty.

Jan. 28, 2018: 5 dead, 1 injured

A shooting at a car wash in Melcroft, Fayette County, left five people, including the shooter, dead and a sixth person injured. They had all met at a car wash for a fistfight between one of the victims and the shooter, Timothy Smith. 

Smith opened fired and eventually shot himself. 

June 8, 2017: 4 dead

A Weis supermarket employee killed three of his co-workers before killing himself. The gunman, Randy Stair, arrived at the Wyoming County grocery store around 1 a.m. as his co-workers were stocking shelves and closing the store for the night. He barricaded the exits and opened fire.

March 10, 2016: 6 dead, 2 injured

Two gunmen fatally shot five people and wounded two others when they opened fire at a backyard cookout in Allegheny County. One gunman shot all the victims in the head. Four women, including one who was pregnant, and a man were killed as they tried to run to the back porch and alleyway for cover.

The gunmen fled on foot. Cheron Shelton and Robert Thomas were charged in connection to the shooting, but the case in not yet resolved. The two men are still awaiting trial.

Dec. 15, 2014: 5 dead

Bradley W. Stone entered the home of his ex-wife's sister in Montgomery County. He killed her, her husband and her two children. Stone then went to his ex-wife's house and shot and killed her. 

Stone was found dead two days later from a drug overdose. 

Aug. 5, 2013: 3 dead, 4 injured

Rockne Warren Newell went on a shooting rampage during a Ross Township supervisors meeting in Monroe County. Newell reportedly had been feuding with township officials because he was angry they forced him off of his debris-strewn land. 

Newell killed three people and injured four others before being tackled by a bystander. He was convicted, and sentenced to three consecutive life prison terms.

Aug. 4, 2009: 4 dead, 9 injured

George Sodini walked into an LA Fitness in Collier Township, Allegheny County, and turned off the lights before he opened fire on a women's aerobics class. Three women were killed and nine others injured before Sodini killed himself. 

April 4, 2009: 3 dead, 2 injured

"We have to forgive," said Aaron Beiler, 66, whose farm is just a few miles away from Nickel Mines. "Jesus forgave us of our sins. How can we expect forgiveness if we can't give it?"

Three police officers were killed and two wounded during a standoff in Allegheny County. Police had responded to a domestic disturbance between a mother and her 22-year-old son, Richard Poplawski. He had been stockpiling weapons. His mother told 911 dispatchers that there were guns in the house, but that information was not relayed to the responding officers.

Poplawski is now on Pennsylvania's death row.

Oct. 2, 2006: 6 dead, 5 injured 

The violence that unraveled at West Nickel Mines School in Lancaster County seems incomprehensible to this day. Gunman Charles Carl Roberts IV charged into the Amish schoolhouse and lined up 10 girls, ranging in age from 6 to 13, and shot them in the back of the head. Five died, and Roberts later killed himself.

Dec. 28, 2000: 7 dead, 3 injured

Ten people were shot execution-style in a crack house in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia. Seven died. The shooting became known as the 'Lex Street Massacre' and stands as the worst mass murder in Philadelphia's history. 

Four men were quickly charged in the crime, but there was insufficient evidence to prosecute and after 18 months in jail, they were released and charges were dropped. They sued, eventually receiving a $1.9 million settlement.

In 2002, four other men were charged with the crime and later convicted. Three are serving a life sentence and one man was sentenced to 15 to 30 years.
