Lighthizer says they’re ready to resume talks with China

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer outlined the trade agenda for the remainder of 2019 to the House Ways and Means Committee during a hearing this morning.

Ranking member Kevin Brady of Texas wanted an update on the trade talks with China.  Brady asked, “If China comes back to the table you are ready to engage?”

Lighthizer says absolutely.  “There was a lot of good work done,” he says.  “A lot of trust was built up.  They are very tough negotiators and very professions.  And we’re certainly willing to engage.”

While the administration says it wants to see an agreement with China, Lighthizer says it is not wavering on its threat to put more tariffs in place if certain issues are not addressed.
