Minnesota Cattlemen president sees progress with Japan

The president of the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association is encouraged by trade negotiations with Japan.

Mike Landuyt of Walnut Grove says he’s hopeful tariff barriers will be addressed in a new agreement.

“We have some members who just got back from a trade mission to Japan, and we’ve been making some progress there. Japan is our number one market.”

He tells Brownfield the Japanese continue to buy U.S. beef despite 40 percent tariffs.

“And Australia and New Zealand beef is down around 16 percent.”

Landuyt says ratifying the USMCA agreement is also critical because Canada and Mexico are the number three and four export markets for  U.S. beef.
