Amtrak power outages cause chaos for commuters along Northeast Corridor

Morning and afternoon Amtrak overhead wire problems caused chaos for those traveling between Philadelphia and parts of New York, according to NorthJersey.com, which is part of the USA TODAY Network.

Riders on Amtrak were stuck without service multiple times as the problems persisted through the morning and into the afternoon. Amtrak is the landlord of Penn Station New York, the busiest rail station in the country.

It's not clear what has caused all the problems but Amtrak said they were investigating the issue.

During the first outage, Amtrak trains between New York Penn Station and Philadelphia were held. That outage began at 10:30 a.m. and power was restored around 10:45 a.m., but trains traveling east from Philadelphia were held until 11 a.m., said Jason Abrams, spokesman for 

Around 12:15 p.m., Amtrak tweeted that service was suspended again, this time between New Rochelle and Philadelphia. At 12:45 p.m., they tweeted that all trains were moving again but with delays. 

During the first outage, three trains in the Hudson River tunnels at Penn Station New York were disabled and a rescue engine was used to move them out of the south tube by 11:15 a.m., said Abrams.
