UW-Platteville’s Dean optimistic about Dairy Innovation Hub support

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Dean says the proposed Wisconsin Dairy Innovation Hub would advance the expanded dairy research the industry needs now. “We’ve done some initial projects, but we just haven’t been able to go as far as we want to in that area, and this hub is going to allow us to pursue that even further.”

Wayne Weber tells Brownfield he’s encouraged by the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee and their support for the consistent investment. “We’re talking about seven-point-nine million dollars over the next biennium, and really beyond. Those are ongoing dollars. At the same time, when we look at the dairy industry, which is producing 43.4 billion-dollars annually in economic activity, this is a small portion of that investment.”

Weber says the lack of funding has limited research projects and prevented some projects from beginning.  He says the dollars would be used to hire additional experts and replace antiquated research machinery, such as Platteville’s older robotic milkers.

If approved by the Legislature and the Governor, the funding would focus on land and water resources, human nutrition, growing farm businesses and communities, and animal health and welfare.
