"This is our fourth year for the marathon," Ruidoso Parks and Recreation Director Rodney Griego said Tuesday.

"There was a gentleman who used to live in the community, Thomas Forsman and his wife, and they were avid runners. They were stationed at Holloman (Air Force Base) with the German Air Force.

"He approached the parks department about running a marathon and he was vital in getting parks and rec to do that. Without his support, we would never could have started it. His entire family were runners and had a lot of experience and we are building upon that."

The Schlotzsky's Kid's Bun Run and 5K were added to broaden the running opportunities for families, Griego said.
