Michigan Senators ask for help from USDA

Michigan Senators are asking USDA for more flexibility for farmers unable to plant because of wet conditions.

Senate Ag Committee Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow tells Brownfield severe weather along with chaotic trade uncertainty has created massive problems for farmers.“It’s a very, very difficult time and I’m doing whatever I can to be able to try to support our farmers.”

Stabenow, along with Senator Gary Peters, says large portions of Michigan have seen more than double normal precipitation rates and many farmers have been unable to plant their crops. 

They want to see increased flexibility within the Federal Crop Insurance program and farmers allowed to graze or plant cover crops on prevented plant acres. 

The Senators are also requesting Michigan farmers affected by heavy rainfall be eligible for disaster assistance.
