Maryland State Police say they caught a Virginia man — wearing body armor and a uniform — in the act of attempting to pull over a vehicle on an interstate near Baltimore on Friday night.

Timothy Ervin Trivett, 54, of Yorktown, was arrested on Interstate 695 without incident and charged with impersonating a police officer and multiple handgun charges, police said.

Just before 8:30 p.m. on Friday, a Maryland state trooper spotted a 2012 black-and-white Chevrolet on the outer loop of I-695 at Green Spring Avenue in Baltimore.

The car, equipped with flashing blue-and-white lights, was attempting to make a traffic stop on a gray Honda Accord, police said.

"The trooper pulled behind the Impala and immediately made contact with the impersonating police officer, later identified as Trivett," police said. "Trivett was wearing what appeared to be police equipment, body armor and a uniform."

Trivett could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

Police continue to investigate.
