Minnesota farmer calls prevent plant “lesser of two evils”

A southwest Minnesota farmer considers prevented planting the lesser of two evils in a way.

Bob Worth of Lake Benton says soils have been too wet going back to last fall, and he estimates about half the intended corn acres in his area will be prevent plant.

“What’s the best, take prevent plant over taking really low yields on your crop? And if you take a low yield, you also put that in your cropping history.”

He tells Brownfield prevented planting won’t cover all his expenses, but it will help pay the bills….

“Plus, when you really mud a crop in you do a lot of damage to your soil. the compaction is unreal. It takes numerous years to get completely out.”

Worth says either way, he’s sad he won’t be able to plant much of his crop this year.

He adds not knowing until this fall if he’s making the best decision keeps him up at night.
