Stabenow: “DMC sign up is a no brainer”

House and Senate Ag Committee leaders are encouraging dairy farmers to sign up for the new Dairy Margin Coverage program June 17.

Senate Ag Committee Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow of Michigan tells Brownfield the program pays for itself.

“For an average farm, when you look at the numbers, it comes out to a net amount of over $13,000 after you pay your premium.”

The program is retroactive to January and will be paying out for at least four months of the year. Stabenow says additional payments are expected.

House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson of Minnesota recommends farmers choose the $9.50 coverage level, saying DMC provides a backstop in the event of low milk prices come down or high feed costs.

Subcommittee on Livestock and Foreign Agriculture Chairman Jim Costa of California, who is overseeing implementation of the dairy provisions in the 2018 Farm Bill, says the program also improves catastrophic coverage for farmers.
