Waterhemp claims resistance to seventh herbicide group

Researchers at the University of Illinois published a study on their recent discovery of waterhemp populations resistant to Group 15 herbicides.

Weed scientist Aaron Hager tells Brownfield their findings were unique.

“There has never been resistance reported anywhere in the world to that family of herbicides in a broad-leaf weed species.”

Hager says this is the 7th class of herbicides that waterhemp has shown resistance to. He says the same resistance has been found in populations of palmer amaranth in Arkansas.

“The dioecious pigweeds, both waterhemp and palmer amaranth, are ramping their game up once again to make their management increasingly difficult.”

Hager says it is important to eliminate all waterhemp seed production by the end of the year to prevent the weed from gaining more resistance.

“No one really enjoys walking soybean fields or corn fields in the middle of August to remove survivors, but unfortunately we are going to have to do a more integrated system.”

Hager reminds farmers that weed control is especially important on prevent plant acres this year as summer annual weeds will grow more rapidly without a crop in those fields.
