Bayer announces $6B investment to develop new weed management tools

An official with Bayer says despite the legal challenges involving its glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup, the company continues to stand behind the product.

“Glyphosate is a safe and effective tool and a cornerstone of many weed management programs on farms today—and we stand absolutely behind that product and will continue to defend it in court,” says Darren Wallis, vice president of communications for Bayer CropScience in North America.

But Wallis tells Brownfield that Bayer is also committed to offering more choices for growers and plans to invest nearly six billion dollars in additional methods to combat weeds over the next decade.

“So that could be digital, biologicals, seeds and traits, as well as breeding—all of those things working together to make sure that farmers have the absolute best tools and choices available to them in the future,” he says.

Bayer also announced a new sustainability initiative. The company says it will reduce its global environmental impact by 30 percent by 2030.
