Using unconventional methods to put pressure on China

A member of the Senate Ag Committee says its time to put more pressure on China. 

During a hearing on Thursday, John Hoeven (ho-ven) of North Dakota suggested taking a more unconventional approach to trade negotiations.  “Can you get a trade deal with Japan,” he asks?  “Can you get it reasonably soon?  If you can get a trade agreement with Japan and you can pass the USMCA it puts pressure on China, doesn’t it?  We have to start getting some of these other agreements as a way to put pressure on China, too.”

Undersecretary Ted McKinney says the USMCA has to get across the finish line first.  “I think the USMCA is the template for the rest of the world on a full-blown FTA,” he says.  “So we must get that right.  We’re here to help with whatever information you or the House needs to move that through.”

McKinney says the USMCA is a very good trade deal for all the countries involved.
