Switching acres? Read your labels

An extension educator is reminding farmers switching acres from corn to soybeans to review input labels.

“A very common herbicide applied to corn acres is atrazine and this has anywhere from a 10 to 18-month crop rotation restriction to soybeans.”

Erin Burns with Michigan State University Extension says weeds this year could be more difficult to control because they might be bigger than normal and herbicide applications have been limited.

“Many of the burndown herbicides to require a waiting period prior to planting.”

Burns highly recommends farmers with prevented plant acres to consider planting cover crops for weed control and reduce insect pressures.
