A day late and a dollar short, story of my life :-). There’s a new Amex Offer out today for Marriott Bonvoy properties that came out a day after I checked out from a week at a Marriott property (as fate would have it). Sync it up now so you don’t end up with the same envy in your heart for those of you who haven’t yet checked out of a property today — or be prepared for that unexpected stay where it comes in handy. Keep in mind that my jealousy is somewhat feigned since I checked out of a property in Greece, but this offer is only valid at properties in the US and US territories. The good news is that you may be able to sync this via the Amex Connect website without even needing to find the targeted offer on your card page.

The Deal

Key Details

  • Expires 9/3/19
  • Only valid at properties in the US and US territories
  • Terms exclude gift card purchases (though past offers have been triggered by GC purchases so long as they are made at the front desk)
  • Excludes Marriott Vacation Club, Design Hotels, Protea Hotels, and Marriott Executive Apartments..
  • Not valid for online retail purchases or purchases of Marriott Bonvoy points.
  • See your offer for full details

Quick Thoughts

A couple of weeks ago in our weekly Facebook Live video debate, Greg and I discussed the Marriott Gift Card deal that recently passed us by from Daily Getaways whereby you could have bought Marriott GCs for 20% off. Some readers thought that deal wasn’t exciting because we often see Amex Offers like this where it is essentially possible to score the same deal (though the terms state that the offer is not valid for gift card purchases, past offers have successfully triggered when a gift card was purchased at the front desk). Of course, the downside here is that you will likely only be able to sync this offer to one Amex card, so choose wisely.

It is perhaps possible that there is also a 4,000 Membership Rewards points version of the offer, though I haven’t yet seen it. If you do find both offer types, you should be able to sync the Membership Rewards offer to one card and the statement credit offer to one card and use both one time each.

Obviously this offer is also great if you have any upcoming paid stays with Marriott Bonvoy properties, and with this one covering peak summer travel season, it is likely that many readers will be looking at spending $200 with Marriott at some point between now and Sept 3rd, so this will be a nice way to save forty bucks. Remember that you can also stack this with a portal — simply shop through the portal to make your booking. You do not need to book an advance pay rate to earn portal rewards — simply make your booking as usual and then at checkout be sure to use the card synced with this offer. Portal rewards should post a few weeks after checkout.

If you do go the gift card route, be aware that many properties either do not sell gift cards or do not know how to do so. I’ve been lucky enough when just stopping at properties as I’m passing by, but many readers have had difficulty finding places that sell them. Be sure not to buy them in a hotel gift shop, where they almost surely will not trigger the offer. Your card will likely need to be charged at the front desk to trigger this one.

Luckily, Stephen found a link to sync this one, so you might not even need to find it targeted in your Amex account — simply try the link under “The Deal” and you may be able to sync this to a card that earns extra rewards at Marriott.

[…] New Marriott offer: $40 back on $200 […]

Steve

Do u think this offer would cover incidentals at the Marriott property? Because my next Marriott stay is on points.

Tim

This work with just buying a gc from marriott?

Rick

Nick

Are there any data points if $200 is for room rate only or room+taxes. I have a stay coming up where the charge is $207 after taxes… wondering how would it show-up on the card?

Jane

I was wondering the same thing. I just called Amex and was told that $200 before taxes. I would appreciate if there are any data points. Buying gift card onsite to make 200+ before tax would work?

Ray

Will this Amex offer also stack with the Ebates portal? I have a July reservation I booked though the Ebates portal when there was a 10% cash back offer. The Amex offer I received requires the reservation be made online at Marriott.com, via the Marriott Bonvoy™ App or by calling 1-888-236-2427.

[…] you’re not seeing the Offer on a card where you want to add it, you can use this link – Direct Link to Amex Offer for Marriott Hotels. Click “Add to Card,” then enter your card details. If you get the message that says to […]

Does anyone know if “autograph collections” are considered design hotels? If not, then I assume this deal will work for an autograph collection property

mauro

no authopgrah collections are their regular boutique collections, design are their higher end boutique properties

Please note the fine print: “This page is intended only for holders of American Express Cards that are not issued by American Express. If you have an American Express Card that is issued by American Express or any of its subsidiaries, please visit your American Express online account page to view available offers for your Card.” I was not targeted for this offer and it did not appear on any AMEX cards (including Marriott). Clicking the link you provided after completing all of the information tells me to sign up at AMEX Offers. So, unfortunately, it really is targeted.

The Connect site is for Amex network cards issued by other banks, e.g. Wells Fargo Propel. But it has been found that if you enter an Amex issued card details, it will prompt you to login to your Amex account, and from there you can add the offer.

DSK

JohnFromATL You are completely correct except for the last part. If you have not been targeted for this offer, it will not let you add it in AMEX Offers. I just completed a three-month period ending June 11 where I was provided with the offer through AMEX Offers, did the $200 spend and received the $40 credit. AMEX is not letting me sign up for it again. So AMEX must be rolling this out to different people at different times.

Jane

Hi DSK, was your $200 spend before taxes or after taxes?

DSK

Surprised–I just got targeted for this again yesterday in AMEX Offers. Unfortunately, I’m not sure about before tax vs. after tax since the amount I charged was way in excess of $200.

AnameOfaguy

No luck. Nothing on any cards and I get this message when trying to add it via Connect: “Based on the Card Number you’ve entered, you can enroll in this offer and other personalized offers by logging into your American Express Account.” Same as the last one. Oddly, I haven’t seen a single amex offer on either of my Bonvoy cards since the switch. Completely empty except for the ads masked as offers.
