Michigan legislature finalizes $1 million for dairy farmers

Michigan joins the growing number of states providing support to dairy farmers.

This week the Michigan legislature approved supplementing funding measures that include $1 million in dairy assistance for farmers for this fiscal year.

House Ag Committee Chair Julie Alexander of Jackson tells Brownfield all licensed grade A milk producers will be receiving a one-time payment of more than $800.

“It’s not a dollar amount that’s going to save any farm, but it acknowledges the challenges that the farmers face and it took a little bit of time to figure out the best way to appropriate those dollars.”

She says the state of the dairy industry and all of agriculture remains a concern for her and fellow law makers.

“Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Madison, Wisconsin with other state legislature from 17 different states and having the conversation on a larger level what’s happening around the country.”

Alexander spoke with Brownfield during the 17th Annual Dairy Day at the Capitol in Lansing.
