Abby Wambach to be inducted into National Soccer Hall of Fame

It seemed to be a matter of time before Abby Wambach would be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Julie Foundy, who played with Wambach on the women's national team and a Hall of Fame member, told her former teammate Saturday that time has arrived.

Wambach will be inducted Sept. 21, along with former U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati — a key figure in the growth of the game in the United States — in Frisco, Texas at Toyota Stadium.

The National Soccer Hall of Fame will make room for Wambach, the all-time leading goal scorer in women's international soccer with 184 goals. Wambach played in the 2004 and 2012 Olympics where the team won gold medals and four Women's World Cups from 2003-2015. The United States won the 2015 Women's World Cup.

The United States Soccer Federation named Wambach the organization's women's athlete of the year six times, the last in 2012. She was the FIFA world women's player of the year in 2012.

Without a doubt, Wambach was one of the stars of the United States-based Women's United Soccer Association, Women's Professional Soccer League and the National Women's Soccer League.
