Franklin County pools and swimming spots open this weekend - except for one

It's Memorial Day weekend - the unofficial start of summer. 

Whether going swimming, cooking out, watching a parade or ceremony honoring those who gave their lives for the country, or just hanging out outside, the weather will be near perfect. Daytime highs will be in low to mid-80s with a mix of sun and clouds for the three-day weekend. It will be humid Sunday and Monday, and a thunderstorm or two could roll in both days.  

Local pools and swimming spots will kick off the 2019 season on Saturday. Check out the list below. 

Chambersburg Aquatic Center 

Address: 1 Memorial Drive

Features: Now in its second season, the aquatic center (formerly Memorial Park Pool) features three water slides, a lazy river, a spray ground, toddler pool and more, plus mini-golf, volleyball, basketball, shade structures and a concession stand. 

Hours: 1-8 p.m. every day (early admission for season-pass holders, 12-1 p.m. weekdays and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday). The facility will be closed May 28-30 while Chambersburg schools are still in session, then open full time May 31. 

Admission fee: Fees vary for borough residents/non-residents - Free for ages 3 and under; $5.50/$9 for youth and adults; $3.50/$6.50 for ages 60+; $3.50/$6.50 after 5 p.m.; $3.50/$5.50 for non-swimmers; $85 for 10 passes, $120 for 15 passes. Discounted weekend passes are $9/$16 for adults/youth and $6/$10 for ages 60+. Northside Pool, Waynesboro

Address: 138 Brown St. 

Features: Zero-depth entry, two slides, a diving area and a children's play area. 

Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, Monday-Wednesday and Friday, noon to 7 p.m. Sundays, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday (members-only swims 10-11 a.m. each weekday)

Shippensburg Veterans Memorial Park Pool

Address: Park Place

Features: An enclosed slide and children's area. 

Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 

Admission fee: Free for ages 2 and under; $4 ages 3-5; $5 ages 6-12; $6 ages 13+; $4 ages 60+; $4 military personnel; $3 non-swimmers; $3 after 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Caledonia State Park

Address: 101 Pine Grove Road, Fayetteville

The pool at Caledonia will not be open for Memorial Day weekend due to unexpected maintenance issues, park management announced this week. 

An opening date has not been announced. Call the park office at 717-352-2161 for updated information.

Cowans Gap State Park

Address: 6235 Aughwick Road, Fort Loudon

Features: The park has a 500-foot sand beach and swimming area. 

Hours: 8 a.m. to sunset
