UPDATE on Wednesday: State police have filed charges against 44-year-old Devi Adhikari of Harrisburg, Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo said.

The charges include attempted criminal homicide, attempted aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and following too closely.

Adhikari remains in the hospital, Chardo said.

A motive has not been determined, he said.

Reported earlier:

A Pennsylvania State Police trooper was driving on Interstate 83 North in the Harrisburg area Friday morning when a man in a car started aggressively following him.

The man went around the trooper, slammed on the brakes and stopped in traffic on the highway. He then stepped out of his vehicle, wielding a machete, according to Trooper Megan Frazer and Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo. Court documents indicate the machete was approximately 15 inches in total length.

The trooper ordered the man to drop the weapon. When he advanced toward the trooper, the officer fired his weapon. The suspect is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Hershey Medical Center, Frazer said.

"He was attempting, it appears, to initiate a violent confrontation between him and the trooper," Chardo said.

The shooting closed I-83 North for hours as police investigated the officer-involved shooting in the area of the Union Deposit exit.

It was one of numerous incidents that snarled traffic on the highway on the busy Memorial Day weekend.

I-83 South remained closed for hours in southern York County as authorities investigated a fatal crash between the Glen Rock and Shrewsbury exits.

The officer-related shooting happened around 10:30 a.m., and traffic was backed up for miles.

The incident remains under investigation. The names of the trooper and the man involved were not released. The officer was not injured.

"This is a very scary situation" Frazer said.

Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo said authorities will be investigating. In addition, authorities will determine whether charges will be filed against the man.
