Nurse Appreciation - blood pressure cuff decorated chocolate sugar cookies

If you've known me for longer than seven seconds, you might be vaguely aware that SUGAR is kind of a thing at my house. I did one of those "sugar diets" once -- you know, where you pretend like you can go an entire 30 days without eating any added sugars. I was mighty proud of myself when I made it to 10am on the first day. MY-TEE PROUD.

So you can imagine that I have to put a little extra effort in as a parent to make sure that my kids get a hefty dose of fruits and vegetables to balance things out a little bit.

We recently did a 60 day fruit/vegetable challenge at our house - where we tried a new fruit or vegetable every single day for 60 days. I tried to balance familiar foods with "exciting" foods so it wasn't too overwhelming for my children.

They didn't love everything, but I was surprised to see that they liked more than half of the new fruits and vegetables! My youngest is still, not surprisingly, the pickiest of them all and absolutely refused to like most of them based on the color of her socks for the day. Or the weather. Or the amount of time between snacks and dinner multiplied by the seasonal coefficient of the heart rate of an African Swallow divided by purple.

When she told me a few weeks ago that she had some applesauce at preschool that she LOVED and wanted me to buy for her -- I WAS ALL IN. She couldn't remember what kind of applesauce it was. And she's five... if it's been more than 20 minutes, that kind of information is G-O-N-E. We scoured the grocery stores, bought dozens of different varieties and brands and flavors and we tested them ALL. And she hated them ALL. Every. Last. One. Of. Them.

I had to grab some milk this morning and we ended up in the baking aisle....somehow. (SERIOUSLY. I have a problem. Send help.) And she's running up and down the length of the entire aisle because it's been at least 17.5 seconds and she's bored out of her mind and she stops dead in her tracks and yells -- "I FOUND IT!!! THAT'S THE APPLESAUCE I LOVE!!!"

You guys.

Her favorite applesauce...

the only kind she'll eat...

...is vanilla pudding.

That makes sense.

You know what else makes sense? The fact that I'm posting Nurse Appreciation cookies long after Nurse Appreciation Week. Because - MAY. This month just got me like a... like a thing that grabs you and stops you from doing all the productive things because your brain feels like it might explode because there are too many things to do and remember all at the same time.

But I figure - medical professionals should be appreciated ALWAYS, right?!

Blood pressure cuff cookie decorating tutorial

How to make blood pressure cuff decorated sugar cookies:

Step 1.

With a medium consistency pink icing, and a #3 tip, outline the cuff area at the top of the cookie. It should look kind of like a squarish paper clip. Let dry for 30 minutes.

Step 2.

Fill in the center of the cuff area with a medium consistency light pink icing.

Step 3.

Pipe a large dot of white icing on the bottom left side of the cookie. Pipe a large dot of black icing on the bottom right side of the cookie. Add another small black dot just under the large one to make the end valve. Let dry for an hour.

Step 4.

Pipe a circle of pink icing around the circle of white icing for the gauge. Add a dot of black icing at the top of the bulb for the pressure release valve. let dry for 30 minutes.

Step 5.

Add tubing to both sides with a medium or thick consistency gray icing and a #3 tip. Pipe a dot of black icing in the center of the gauge and use the icing tip to pull it to a point.
