Dallas Tonsager has died. The former Oldham, South Dakota
dairy farmer was chairman of the Farm Credit Administration and served the
Obama administration as USDA rural development undersecretary. Tonsager was president
of the South Dakota Farmers Union from 1988 to 1993. He died Tuesday from

“Dallas spent his career fighting on behalf of farmers and ranchers in his
native South Dakota, and across the country,” said Representative Collin
Peterson of Minnesota, Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee. “He worked
especially hard to ensure the success of the biofuels industry, as well as
highlighting the healthcare and broadband needs of rural America.”
“Production agriculture and rural America are better off due to the hard work
of Dallas Tonsager,” said the committee’s Ranking Member Mike Conaway. “Dallas
was a tireless advocate for rural America.”
“Dallas had a life-long passion for rural communities and agriculture,” said Todd
Van Hoose, President and CEO of the Farm Credit Council. “During his time in
Washington, D.C., Dallas worked tirelessly to support farm families and make a
more vibrant rural economy. His leadership and his friendship will be deeply
missed.”
