Farmer considering options after facing planting delays

Many farmers in the Midwest continue to face planting delays because of cool and wet conditions.

Southern Indiana Farmer Ben Kron says it has been one of the worst planting seasons he’s seen.

“It’s really bad- we thought last year was bad but at this time we were still probably 70-80% done,” he says. “I would say most farmers in this area are 10-20% done right now so It’s probably the worst we’ve seen in 20-30 years.”

He tells Brownfield there was finally a brief window to begin planting last week.

“We’ve been able to get in the fields here in the last few days,” he says. “We’re just getting a start and still dodging raindrops.”

Kron says they might have to change their planting intentions.

“You have to decide here in the next week what you’re going to be doing with your corn acres, but I would say a lot of corn acres are either going to soybeans or prevented planting.”

Kron grows corn and soybeans near Evansville.
