Small refinery waivers remain top concern

Ethanol industry leaders continue to express concern about RFS small refinery waivers granted to oil companies.

Eamonn Byrne with renewable energy firm Lakeview Energy, based in Chicago, says the EPA has eliminated two and a half billion gallons of demand by issuing those waivers.

“The most ironic part is some of the largest multi-billion-dollar companies in the US were recipients of those waivers which in my eyes and I think in the eyes of the agricultural community is completely unjust.”

Byrne says he is also anxious to see year-round E-15 be finalized.

“That could create up to seven billion gallons of new ethanol demand and two billion bushels of corn for the American farmer which is over a 50% jump from E-10.”

Byrne and other Illinois members of Growth Energy recently discussed ethanol issues with lawmakers in DC.
