Nebraska farmer finishes corn; more rain on the way

A southeast Nebraska farmer says they finally finished planting corn this week.

Dan Nerud of Dorchester says emergence on the earlier-planted corn has been a little uneven.

“It’s a little erratic this year just because of the conditions that we’re under. We had to work the ground a little wet, and got in a little wet to anhydrous, just to try and keep going,” Nerud says. “So it won’t be a perfect stand by no means, from what I’m seeing, but it is starting to row up nice.”

Nerud says they’re moving as fast as they can right now with more rain in the forecast, starting this weekend.

“We’re trying to do some spraying right now, to catch up ground that’s going to go to beans. My son’s spraying today and I’m chopping some stalks on ridges where we’re going with beans on them. Just trying to get some stuff done ahead of the weather.”

Nerud says the long-range forecast calls for rain, off and on, over the next 10-14 days. He says it could possibly be the end of the month before they’re back in the field.
