Underwater fields in Southeast Missouri

Some Southeast Missouri farmland in the Mississippi River valley has been under water for more than 100 days.

State Representative Don Rone of Portageville, who serves on the levee board in southeast Missouri’s Caruthersville, says excessive rain and flooding have put farmers in a tough spot, “Cotton planting time is a certain time and if you don’t get it in you don’t get it in. I mean, you don’t usually like to go past June 1.”

Rone says cotton farmers will probably have to replant and farmers behind the levee will be late getting a crop in. Rice planting is also behind in the Bootheel. Rone says there have been no levee breaks in southeast Missouri, just too much rain.
