All-American

The popular Markstein Quartet goes red-white-and-blue for “All American,” a free concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 19, in Meeting Room 1 of the Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Central Library, 308 Forrest Ave., Cocoa.

Concertmaster Emeritus Igor Markstein leads the foursome, and plays the violin to boot. Joining Markstein is his cellist wife, Joan, and Joni Roos on violin and Space Coast Symphony concertmaster Carey Moorman on viola.

The quartet will play works by American composers arranged for strings, including selections from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein, "Hoe Down" from the “Rodeo” ballet by Aaron Copland, "Embraceable You" by George Gershwin and several ragtime pieces by Scott Joplin.

Rounding out the concert is the very moving, "Lincoln Portrait" by Aaron Copland, narrated by special guest and Brevard County Library Services Director, Jeff Thompson, who will join a list of previous narrators that includes Neil Armstrong, Walter Cronkite and Marian Anderson, among others.

It’s Vegas in Brevard, baby!

There is no need to deal with the hassle of McCarran Airport in Las Vegas now that Temple Beth Sholom will host Casino Night from 7 to 11 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at the Center for Collaboration, 1100 Rockledge Blvd., Rockledge.

The upscale evening will feature popular Vegas-style gaming tables, heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts catered by Green Turtle Market, a full open bar, music, silent auction, including vacations and travel packages, prizes and raffles.

Meet Vera

Brevard County treasured master artist, Vera R. Sattler, is the featured artist during May at Fifth Avenue Gallery, 1470 Highland Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District.

Sattler has been actively working in the glass industry since 1946. Her specialties are stained glass, copper enameling, slumped and fused glass, and glass jewelry.

Sattler’s “Glass Creations, and Other Art “runs through June 1.

Summertime and the living is easy

The City of Palm Bay will again host summer camps at the Tony Rosa Community Center, 1502 Port Malabar Blvd., and at the Ted Whitlock Community Center, 1951 Malabar Road N.W.

Camps for ages 6 to 12 run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays beginning June 3 through August 9.

Cost is $100 per week or $30 per day (additional fees apply for field trips and camp specials). A teen camp for students 12 to 15 will also be held at the Tony Rosa Community Center.  The cap runs June 3 to Aug. 2. runs weekdays from June 3 through August 2. Cost is $100 per week plus $50 for the field trips.

Fun-tastic

Fall into wellness at the Fun-tastic Community Health Fair to be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, May 18, at the Lipscomb Community Center, 3316 Monroe St., Melbourne.

The free event features information on wellness and disease prevention. There also will be demonstrations, a bicycle rodeo and a kid’s corner with arts and crafts, face painting and free giveaways. Refreshments will be served.

Mad about it

Wonder, whimsy and fashionable fun are in store for guests of “A Mad Hatter Tea Party & Luncheon” at 11 a.m., Friday, May 17 at Eau Gallie Yacht Club, 100 Datura Drive, Indian Harbour Beach. The event, hosted by Promise Guild Inc., will feature tea, silent auction and raffle baskets.

This event will double as a membership drive for the Promise Guild Inc., a group of dedicated individuals who support the mission of Promise in Brevard, which provides affordable, independent housing, as well as vocational/employment training and life enrichment opportunities for adults with special needs.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Promise.

Eco-Explorers

Sea Turtle Conservancy and Brevard County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands Program will host Eco-Explorer summer camps at the Barrier Island Sanctuary, where children can make connections with ocean-to-lagoon habitats and wildlife while sharing fun adventures on the water.

The camp experience includes a sea turtle encounter, snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding to explore the diversity of life on the lagoon, and goes on to a grand finale of surfing to experience the elements of the ocean and beach that attracts more nesting sea turtles than virtually any place on Earth.

Camps are offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each week in June. Cost of $325 includes transportation, certified aquatic instructors, equipment, T-shirt, one-year Sea Turtle Conservancy honorary e-membership and a complimentary guided sea turtle walk.
