May expected to start cool and unsettled

More perception is in the forecast for the next two weeks which should further delay fieldwork for farmers in the Midwest.

“Below normal temperatures here are expected along the northern tier of states, including at least a part of Michigan. I would not be surprised to see some areas across southern or central lower Michigan pick up an inch or two of heavy, wet snow.”

Michigan state climatologist Jeff Andresen says active storm systems along the U.S./Canadian border will also bring above normal precipitation.

By the second week of May, he says, “Warmer than normal mean temperatures returning to much of the Midwest into the Great Lakes region.  It also calls for below normal perception.”

Active storms throughout the Midwest the last few months have led to increased precipitation across Michigan, as much as 200 percent above normal in parts of Northern Michigan.  Andresen says growing degree days remain up to a week behind normal for the state.
