Annual plant and garden sale benefits Capitan Library

The annual Capitan Public Library Plant and Garden Sale offers healthy plants, garden and home decorations, and gifts for Mother's Day.

But most important, it helps support the operation of the library, which is manned primarily by a volunteer crew.

This year the sale is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 4, and on the same weekend as Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday at Smokey Bear Days, May 3 and May 4.

"These are two 'don't miss events' in Capitan," volunteer Sharon Stewart said.

Garden art and home decorations will be sold at the annual event to benefit the Capitan library.

An assortment of spectacular bedding plants, flowers, shrubs, seeds, and vegetable plants for the food garden and yard beautification are available at the library plant sale, she said

"Just thinking of spring and outdoor planting makes a person antsy to get hands dirty and to enjoy the beautiful days," she said.

Also available at the library sale are house plants, cacti, succulents, yard tools, yard art, furniture, jewelry, art, spring home decorations, plus "oodles of other goodies," including books at $5 for a bag, Stewart said.

Don't forget Mother's Day when making purchases, she reminded.

"This is a perfect opportunity for to find that special and unique item or plant for Mom while helping out the library," she said.

Real and not-so-real flower arrangements will be sold along with other decorative items.

Homemade baked goods also will be sold. The list includes pies, scones, cookies, candy, quick breads, and other delights made by the volunteers of the library.

The Not 2 Shabby Shop, the library's thrift store, opens early at 8 a.m., May 4, to coincide with the library plant sale.

The Capitan Public Library primarily is run by volunteers. Friends of the Library is a 501C non-profit that raises the money to run the library. The Plant & Garden Sale is one of the library's main fundraisers, Stewart said.

The library depends on the Plant Sale, the Holiday Bazaar, public donations and the Not 2 Shabby Shop to bring in the operating funds for the library.

"The library is here for the public," Stewart said. "But your help is needed for the library to be here for you."

The library is at 101 East 2nd Street in Capitan.
