San Angelo ISD bus driver appreciation breakfast slated

Staff report

Volunteer organizers are working to finalize plans for the fifth annual appreciation breakfast for San Angelo ISD bus drivers at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 30.

The breakfast will be at the SAISD Transportation Department, 1725 St. Ann St., as parents of present and former district students, along with members of the local retired teachers’ group, team up to provide the morning meal.

Organizer Susan Gober said, "With the very lives of our community’s children in the able hands of the district’s drivers, it is fitting to honor them in this small but thoughtful manner."

Gober said they want to make sure the district’s many bus drivers and the department’s staff are generously fed, and donations are being requested from local businesses who might want to participate in this annual event.

So far, Starbucks at 3rd St. and Bryant Blvd. has pledged to donate coffee for the fourth year in a row, and Chick-fil-A on Knickerbocker Road is donating some of its chicken biscuits.

If you or your place of business would like to contribute food or a monetary donation, contact Gober at 325-947-5882, or email gosusan@msn.com.

The breakfast was first held in spring 2015 when a parent wanted to show appreciation for the many bus trips her children had safely taken across the state while on school events.

SAISD runs 97 buses in total, including 59 standard models, 8 charter buses and 30 special-needs models.

According to the district, approximately 3,500 students ride a school bus daily, and the buses will have traveled 1.5 million miles by the time the school year comes to an end.
