Walmart offers branded Angus beef

Walmart has announced it’s creating an Angus beef supply chain for stores in the southeast U.S.

CEO of the American Angus Association Allen Moczygemba tells Brownfield Walmart’s goal to have a national Angus brand line builds off years of partnership and pays tribute to what their association has created with the Certified Angus Beef brand.

“This year we’ll sell over 1.2 billion pounds of Certified Angus Beef and the association leads the groundwork for this.”

He says Walmart’s Angus brand will be similar to Certified Angus Beef qualifications and will create more awareness and demand for Angus cattle.

Senior Vice President of Meat at Walmart U.S. Scott Neal says the company will be creating a system to provide customers the transparency and traceability throughout the entire supply chain.  Most beef is currently sourced from Cargill and Tyson Foods.

Walmart will partner with 44 Farms in Texas to expand their branded beef program that started last year.  Cattle will be sourced from 44 Farms, fed at Mc6 Cattle Feeders outside of Hereford, Texas, then processed by Creekstone Farms in Arkansas City, Kansas.  Packaging will be done in Augusta, Georgia by FPL Foods.  More than 450 jobs will be added to the processing and packaging facilities as part of the announcement.

Cuts will be marketed as all-natural, no-hormones-added Black Angus beef at 500 stores across the southeast.

Walmart has similar farm to store integrated value chains with poultry and dairy.
