A former Walmart employee is facing charges of grand theft after being accused of taking more than $1,500 worth of items from the store.

Lydia Toby, 21, was indicted by a Minnehaha County grand jury last week on one count of grand theft, a Class 6 felony.

A Walmart loss prevention employee began looking into the matter when a cash register Toby had worked on was short $100 in July 2018, according to documents.

The loss prevention employee started watching security footage of Toby and saw her scan a gift card from her pocket and load $100 to the card, and cashed it out for herself, according to an affidavit in support of an arrest warrant.

Toby and another unknown woman are accused of "under ringing" items when checking out, meaning items were put into a bag without being scanned first, according to the affidavit. The accusations stem from incidents from June to August 2018.

According to the affidavit, Toby is accused of under ringing items such as a charger, towels, a pillow, cubed meat, photo albums, mirrors, children's clothing, makeup, various food items and more. The total value of the items failed to scan was $1,594.73.

Toby's initial court appearance is scheduled for next week.
