FFA provides Lincoln, Nebraska student with ‘leadership skills, confidence’

Jenifer Velazquez-Perfecto grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. She knew very little about agriculture until she joined FFA her junior year through the Lincoln Public Schools Career Academy.

Now a senior at Lincoln North Star High School, Velazquez-Perfecto says her two years in FFA have helped her gain confidence and grow as a leader.

“I was actually very quiet back then, very reserved. I didn’t like talk to front of people or be outgoing,” she says. “But through FFA, I was elected treasurer and now I’m co-president. So I’ve gained a lot of leadership skills—a lot more confidence.

“I am able to now be in charge of things that my chapter is doing. It has impacted me by helping me learn new ways to talk to people and to build relationships.”

Velazquez-Perfecto has participated in ag demo, land judging and livestock judging. She’s enjoyed it so much she wants to pursue a career in agriculture with plans to major in ag communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln starting this fall.
