Farmer gets a good start on planting before Good Friday

Some Missouri farmers are making planting progress despite the precipitation that’s stalled other farmers in the state. North Central Missouri grower Robert Alpers tells Brownfield he was in the field following some sunny, windy days a week ago.

“Tuesday afternoon we got started and we ran all day,” Alpers told Brownfield Ag News. “We got a little over 400 acres in, I think about 425 or 430. It kind of gives us time now to catch our breath, grease up everything and check everything over again and I think we’ll be back in the field [Friday].”

Alpers, who farms with his son at Prairie Home, Missouri, was sandwiched between heavier precipitation that stopped other Missouri farmers.

“This time of the year you want to just keep running,” said Alpers, “but you also need to get those seeds up and growing and make sure we’ve got some good moisture  and turn off warm now for a day or two, and stuff will get germinated pretty quick and get off to a good start.”
