Some Wisconsin farmers are starting field work

Field conditions in Wisconsin are improving, even though much of the state received more than an inch of rain last week.

Manure spreading, tillage, and early planting have all begun, but USDA reporters say field conditions are difficult in southern Wisconsin and very difficult in the central and northern parts of the state.  They say there were almost two-and-a-half days suitable for field work last week.

Spring tillage is 8% complete, corn planting only 1% done, and 10% of the oats are planted.  Potato planting is now 7% finished.

Forty-six percent of Wisconsin’s winter wheat is in good to excellent condition.  Pasture conditions are improving with 27% now in good to excellent condition.

The Maple trees are budding, so the syrup season is over.
