Wet conditions persist in Michigan

Intermittent rain showers kept most fields too wet for fieldwork in Michigan last week.

Beef producer Todd Brink of Caledonia says while calving season hasn’t been ideal, he feels fortunate compared to farmers impacted by severe weather this spring.

“We don’t really have much to complain about here.  We’re in a good spot in West Michigan.  We don’t have too many tornadoes, we don’t have floors, we don’t have fires, we’re very fortunate.”

USDA says seven percent of oats and 12 percent of sugarbeets are now planted.

Winter wheat condition improved 12 percent to 40 percent good to excellent and 10 percent of the crop is jointed.

Fruit crops are starting to green up, but wet conditions make it difficult for growers to do much field work.

Topsoil and subsoil moisture remain at 99 percent adequate to surplus.
