EVANSVILLE — Two people were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries after a fire at a Downtown Evansville apartment Sunday night.

The fire was reported just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday at 625 Liberty Way. A second-floor apartment received significant damage, Evansville Fire Department spokesman Mike Larson said. One of the people inside the apartment hurt his hand trying to get a fire extinguisher from the hallway to put the fire out, Larson said.

Damage was contained to the apartment where it started, while there was smoke and water damage to three other apartments in the building. Four people were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross was called to assist residents with housing and other needs, Larson said.

Two at the apartment complex were taken to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, Larson said. No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
