The York African American Historical Preservation Society (YAAHPS) will host a lecture from York native Dr. Debra Newman Ham at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4.

The lecture "Black History 1619 to 2019," chronicles the 400-year history of African Americans in Pennsylvania and will also feature a presentation from Cecelia Harris.

The YAAHPS was founded in spring 2018 by Jeff Kirkland. Kirkland said he believes the event will help "make the community much stronger and more holistic." He acknowledged that often a sense of identity and belonging can be difficult for minorities, especially youth. He hopes the discussion will help reconnect a sense of belonging and purpose through the understanding of history.

"Memories are precious for us to preserve," Kirkland said.

"A Phenomenal Journey: Four Centuries of African American History in Pennsylvania," will be held at the Shiloh Baptist Church 4-6:30 p.m. The event is free.
