Students from pre-school through sixth grade form St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School  did their weekly Stations of the Cross devotion differently this week.

Students ordinarily do the devotion on most Fridays at the school, but on Good Friday they went to Santo Niño de Atocha Church at Three Rivers to do the Stations of the Cross.

"I'm very proud. There were no accidents, thank God. Everybody made it up there," St. Frances Cabrini School Principal Victor Gonzales said. "I'm very, very proud of the kids and their devotion. Going up there, many of the kids recognized the stations because they studied that. The religious aspects of teaching, it's obvious that they are really taking it to heart and I'm really very proud of them."

Although there were students from pre-school age to sixth grade, not all of the students went and some of the smaller ones did not go all the way up to the cross, Gonzales said.

The students hiked the one-mile trail in 45 minutes stopping at each of the 14 Stations of the Cross to pray and contemplate each station.

"Once up (to the cross at the top), we reflected on our journey up there and what Jesus gave for us then we came down, ate our lunch, had the kids run around and then we came back to the school," Gonzales said.

The Stations of the Cross— or Way of the Cross as it is sometimes known— devotion is a commemoration of Jesus Christ's journey from condemnation to his crucifixion on Calvary to his entombment.
