Milwaukee's Public Works Department has opened a fund to support the parking enforcement officer who was beaten and stabbed in early April.

U.S. Bank established a fund called "Friends of the DPW Parking Enforcement Officer" to help with the officer's recovery after surgery, the department said.

The officer, a 60-year-old department veteran, has decided to remain anonymous. He has not yet returned to work, the department said.

Public Works officials said the man was confronted April 2 by multiple assailants while he was issuing a citation for a vehicle that was blocking a sidewalk.

Those interested in donating to help the officer can go to any U.S. Bank branch and ask about the fund by name. Cash or checks are accepted.
