Missouri corn grower is kept from field by wet weather

Wet weather continues to delay field work in parts of the Corn Belt. Jay Schutte was on the cusp of being able to begin field work until weather intervened.

“We had about 4 inches of snow last Sunday and it’s really set us back some,” Schutte told Brownfield Ag News. “It’s going to be a challenging year; we got no fall work done, no fertilizer put down. When it’s time to run we better have our boots laced on tight.”

The Mexico, Missouri farmer tells Brownfield he’s encouraged that he was able to apply herbicide on some corn ground that he does not till.

“You’ve got to have small victories every so often,” he said. But that apparently does not extend to the relationship Schutte has with his physician, from whom expects professional advice resulting from long hours to get the crop in.

“My anticipation is burning a lot of headlights,” said Schutte, referring to the time he’ll spend on a planter when the window opens for field work to begin, adding with a laugh, “I anticipate getting a lecture from my doctor that I get every year that coffee is not a substitute for sleep.”
