Deputies arrest Thousand Oaks man with loaded semi-automatic rifle

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Thousand Oaks after a probation search uncovered a loaded and unregistered semi-automatic rifle at his home, Ventura County deputies said.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2700 block of Edgeview Court in Thousand Oaks.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Cory Rivas, 31, of Thousand Oaks, was on probation for previous drug violations and had an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for violating his probation, according to authorities.

Detectives said they searched Rivas’ vehicle as allowed by the terms of his probation and found drug paraphernalia. Rivas also appeared to be under the influence of drugs, according to authorities. He was detained for the outstanding warrant and deputies conducted a probation search at his residence nearby.

The search yielded an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in Rivas’ bedroom, according to authorities. The rifle was unregistered, had no serial number and appeared to be loaded and functional, deputies said.

Rivas was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of an assault weapon, being under the influence of a controlled substance with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a drug addict, according to authorities, and booked into county jail.

An unregistered and loaded AR-15 assault rifle was seized on Saturday from a Thousand Oaks residence during a probation search.
