Shreveport man sentenced to 9 years in 2017 Peach Street homicide

A 22-year-old Shreveport man was sentenced to nine years in prison in connection with the 2017 fatal shooting of a 63-year-old man.

A co-defendant in the case is set for trial in May.

Ledarius Mitchell, 22, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Tuesday and was sentenced to nine years imprisonment at hard labor with the Louisiana Department of Corrections, according to Bossier Parish Court minutes.

Mitchell was one of five who was arrested and initially charged with the first-degree murder of 63-year-old Salvador Aguirre in May 2017.

Jylan Winn, of Bossier City; Jared Brooks, of Shreveport; Timias Jackson, of Shreveport; and  a then 14-year-old male of Bossier City was also arrested in connection to the crime.

The months following his arrest, a grand jury returned an indictment of second-degree murder against Mitchell. He pleaded not guilty.

At least two of the four co-defendants pleaded guilty on reduced charges.

Jylan Winn, 19, of Bossier City, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in May 2018 and was later sentenced to 20 years imprisonment at hard labor, suspended five years.

Jared Brooks, 21, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder in December 2018. He was sentenced in February to 25 years imprisonment at hard labor with credit for time served.

Winn and Brooks were both previously indicted on second-degree murder.

Timias Jackson, 22, of Shreveport, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and rejected a plea offer from prosecutors. Jackson is set for trial on May 6, according to court minutes.

The shooting occurred after midnight May 25, 2017 at a residence in the 1100 block of Peach Street.

Responding officers found the victim dead inside the home with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

In other parts of the home, officers found another gunshot victim, who was injured in the arm, and a third victim who was apparently beaten, according to previous reports.

The two surviving victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
