EAST LANSING — Michigan State's football program unveiled over the weekend a new Nike lime-green alternate uniform players are expected to wear at least once during the 2019 season.

It has generated mixed reviews on social media, including pleas from at least two former Spartans for current players to never wear them.

Reactions from former Spartans RJ Shelton and Flozell Adams that surfaced on Twitter before Saturday's intrasquad spring game at Spartan Stadium:

  • RJ Shelton (@rj_shelton), former running back,: "Take them back. Get back to the basics. I can see an all-black or a throwback jersey. This jersey doesn't represent Michigan State and what we stand for as a football program."
  • Flozell Adams (@FlowMaster76), former offensive tackle: "PLSSSSSSSSSSS don't do this."

Current players seem to dig the new threads.

MSU junior cornerback Josiah Scott told the Detroit Free Press' Chris Solari on Saturday he first thought the uniforms were for basketball because of the lime-green "State" lettering on the front of the jersey.

Michigan State's football program unveiled before Saturday's spring football game a new Nike alternate jersey.

"But a bunch of people are excited," Scott said, "just because of the accessories you can probably wear with (the jersey) — make it look good."

Spartans linebacker Joe Bachie told the Big Ten Network's Michelle McMahon on Saturday that he liked the color scheme.

"It's a special uniform," Bachie said. "I'm hoping we wear it at night. I think it's going to look great at night. I hope we get to keep the cleats — those are some sick cleats.

"...I like the neon; it's a new thing now. You see our basketball team with it all the time."

How do you feel about the alternate uniforms? Feel free to vote in the poll below.

Michigan State's men's basketball team wore lime-green Nike uniforms during the 2015-16 season.

They were part of Nike's Hyper Elite Disruption athletic apparel line.

Since then, basketball players have occasionally worn Spartan green uniforms with lime-green lettering and numbers on the front of the jerseys.

Michigan State football players are expected to wear this uniform for at least one game during the 2019 season.

The uniforms have also included lime-green accents on the shorts.

PSU game likely?

The Spartan football team, unranked in most early preaseason polls out so far, have seven home games this season, including an Oct. 26 visit from Penn State.

Don't be surprised if coach Mark Dantonio's team makes its alternate uniform debut for that matchup. A time for the game is yet to be determined.

The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 12 in a Sporting News preseason poll and No. 13 in Athlon Sports and NCAA.com polls. A "way-too-early" ESPN top 25 poll has the team at No. 16.

Other MSU home games for 2019: Tulsa (Aug. 30), Western Michigan (Sept. 7), Arizona State (Sept. 14), Indiana (Sept. 28), Illinois (Nov. 9) and Maryland (Nov. 30).

The Spartans' road games: Northwestern, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan and Rutgers.
