'Carelessly discarded lit smoking material' started Washington Township house fire

A "carelessly discarded lit smoking material" started a house fire Wednesday in Washington Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. 

Four people at the home at the time of the fire, including a 10-year-old boy, escaped injury. 

The fire at the single-family home on Mentzer Gap Road started around 4:30 a.m. on the rear porch and deck area. It spread to the exterior kitchen wall, resulting in moderate damage, police said. 

No other information was provided in a police report.

Other police incidents: 

  • A driver fled the scene after the vehicle they were driving struck a tractor-trailer while trying to pass it on the left on Interstate 81 at about 8 a.m. April 11 just north of Exit 3 in Antrim Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Police said the driver continued traveling south on the interstate after initially exiting the highway. The tractor-trailer sustained minor damage and the driver was uninjured. 
  • A driver fled the scene after the vehicle they were driving struck a mailbox just before 2 p.m. April 8 in the 5000 block of White Church Road, Greene Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. 
  • Mark Isbister, 42, Chambersburg, was cited for disorderly conduct after a fight at about 12:30 p.m. April 12 in the middle of the road in the 200 block of Harvest Lane, Guilford Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. 
  • A tractor-trailer struck a stop sign while attempting to turn left onto High Street from Kennedy Street, Guilford Township, at about 12:20 p.m. April 8, according to Pennsylvania State Police. 
  •  One person was arrested following a fight at about 7:30 p.m. April 11 at Dollar General, 6139 Lincoln Way East, Greene Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. 
  • One person sustained a possible neck injury and two others were uninjured as a result of a rear-end crash at about 8:20 p.m. April 11 on Lincoln Way East at the traffic light at Mower Road, Guilford Township according to Pennsylvania State Police. 
  • No one was injured after one vehicle pulled out in front of another at about 8 p.m. April 11 at the intersection of Findlay Drve and Buchanan Trail West, Peters Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. 
  • Wesley Smith, 22, Fayetteville, was taken to Chambersburg Hospital with suspected minor injuries after the motorcycle he was operating fell onto its side after the rear tire locked up because he hit the brakes too heavily at about 10:35 p.m. April 8 on Fetterhoff Chapel Road, Guilford Township. 
  • Adam Thomas, 18, of Orrtanna was uninjured after the vehicle he was driving overturned three times after being struck by a vehicle that turned out in front it onto Lincoln Way East from Fayetteville's Main Street at about 12:15 p.m. April 7 in Greene Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police. The other driver, Judith Kern, 76, of Fayetteville was uninjured. She was cited for disobeying traffic-control devices.
